Why We Endorsed Romney

Webmaster Vote endorses Mitt Romney for the presidential election in 2008. Based on the record and positions of the candidates, Webmaster Vote determines that Governor Romney would best promote the future prosperity of the United States through sound policies regarding Internet use and e-commerce.

In an increasingly competitive global arena, governmental leaders must understand the fundamental economic forces affecting commerce, not the least of which is the ease with which businesses can redirect jobs and opportunities to areas of the world that welcome productivity. Many American politicians do not understand those forces. They myopically regard the Internet as just something else to be taxed and regulated. Other leaders properly regard the Internet as a portal to a greater future. People who understand the importance of the Internet to our future economic prospects must determine in which camp each candidate belongs.

Webmaster Vote believes that the Internet is a potent force to (1) meet the challenges and opportunities of globalization, (2) unleash the entrepreneurial genius of Americans, and (3) facilitate greater levels of democratic participation. To assess each candidate’s position on issues important to Internet users, Webmaster Vote graded the candidates in taxation, social security, economic development, personal experience/education, immigration, social programs, electibility, and education areas. Governor Romney led all candidates, grading out at an A-, followed by Rudi Giuliani with a B+, Fred Thompson with a B, and John McCain with a C+.

Governor Romney’s grade was boosted most by his strong record and positions on taxes and economic competitiveness. Senator John McCain’s grade suffered because of his record and positions against free speech and democratic participation. Governor Mike Huckabee’s grade suffered because of his record and positions on taxes - especially his intent to tax Internet sales - and his overall lack of business savvy. Much of America’s future prosperity turns on the Nation’s policies regarding Internet usage. Webmaster Vote determines that Governor Romney would promote the best Internet policy - and, with that, would best promote the future prosperity of Americans.
